Patient transport
A patient journey is a journey between your home and a healthcare provider. For example, it can be a doctor, physiotherapist, dentist or counsellor. The journey can be made by bus, train or private car, for example. You are responsible for getting to and from your planned visit. If, for health reasons, you are unable to travel by public transport or your own car, you may be entitled to medical transport by taxi. In this case, a certificate from the healthcare provider is required.
Patient transport by taxi or special vehicle
If the healthcare staff assesses that you need to travel to your appointment by taxi or special vehicle due to your medical condition, you can book the trip at the dispatch centre for service trips. Book your trip no later than two weekdays before the planned visit.
Please note that the healthcare staff will wait until after your appointment before deciding whether you have medical reasons that require you to go home by taxi or special vehicle. In this case, the healthcare staff will book the journey home.
If you become ill and need care quickly, you can contact the booking centre around the clock to book a trip.
Cancelling a patient trip
You must cancel both the trip and the appointment if you are unable to attend a planned appointment. You can cancel your trip by calling the booking centre. If you do not cancel the trip, you may be required to pay for the trip.
Patient travel outside the county
Contact the dispatch centre for help with arranging travel outside the county. To do this, it is required that:
- You have a specialist referral from Region Västerbotten for which the dispatch centre has received a certificate.
- The certificate will show you which mode of transport you need and whether you need to have a companion with you.
By agreement with the dispatch centre, you can also arrange the trip yourself. You will then receive a grant based on what is written on the certificate. It is the actual travel costs that are reimbursed. You apply by sending tickets and a receipt from your healthcare visit to the region.
You can seek care outside the county on your own initiative, but then you will have to pay for the entire trip yourself.
For questions about high-cost protection, free passes for medical travel, allowances for own travel and questions about submitted medical certificates, we refer you to the Patient Travel Unit.
